FEMA Floodplain Mapping - Update
If you live along Indian Creek, Mill Creek, Tomahawk Creek or Cedar Creek, you may have received a postcard recently stating that the updated FEMA flood insurance rate maps will take effect August 3, 2009.
These maps were presented to all potentially impacted residents at a series of public meetings in November 2007 and February 2009. At these meetings, residents were informed of the purpose for updating the maps and the potential impact (if any) to them.
Receiving the postcard doesn’t automatically mean that your home is in the floodplain. The postcard is a reminder for those that will be in the updated FEMA floodplain, that they could potentially get a discounted rate by purchasing flood insurance prior to the updated maps becoming official on August 3rd.
If you previously attended a public meeting and were told your houses status, that hasn’t changed.
If you are unsure if your home will be impacted by these updated floodplain maps, you may view the maps at Johnson County AIMS Online Mapping. Simply follow these steps to see your house in relation to the updated FEMA maps.
- Enter your street address in the “Search for Location” box (right hand side).
- After the map regenerates, tick the box next to “Flood Hazard” under the “Other Layers” list (left hand side).
- Click the “Redraw” button under the map viewing window.

Welcome to the City of Olathe Watershed Alternatives website. This site will enable residents who live along Indian Creek, Mill Creek and Cedar Creek to participate in the City's effort to develop stormwater management improvements and reduce flood risks. The goals of this phase of the project are:
- to confirm potential flooding locations,
- survey structures in these locations,
- rate the flooding severity and
- obtain funding for studies to develop possible solutions.
The City will seek funding from the Johnson County Stormwater Management Advisory Council (SMAC) and other sources.
